Bear Witness

With a majority of my work focused on the human form and its expressive applications in photography, this body of work seeks to use the human form and fabric to create a physical representation of each individual's inner struggle between order and chaos. These self-portraits, informed visually by both Renaissance sculpture and modern studio techniques of fashion and beauty photography, visually illustrate the concept of the duality across the technical, visual, and conceptual planes of the series.

Using pieces of fabric and my own body, my process involves hurling myself around the space to 10 second intervals of shots, timing my position with the sheets in hopes to capture random, unrepeatable shots. Lighting is carefully selected beforehand and color is removed from the image to assist the conceptual implications within the photos. The imperfections and spontaneous moments captured in the shape of the sheets and muscle tension contrast with the atmosphere of heightened precision and driven focus the studio offers. The control of the studio battles with the freedom of the subject and wardrobe, creating a physical manifestation of opposites existing with one another for the viewer to observe.
